After breakfast, the hall slowly emptied. Plates were stacked. Tables wiped. The morning chatter faded as warriors left for training and leaders moved toward meetings.
Julia remained.
She scrubbed pots until her fingers reddened. She rinsed dishes in water that had long since cooled. She wiped the counters until the wood gleamed.
Work kept the silence from swallowing her whole.
When the kitchen was spotless, she removed her apron and walked toward the leadership wing. The alpha suite.
Her steps slowed.
For years, this corridor had held secret warmth for her. Midnight footsteps. Soft laughter. Whispered promises. Now it felt like walking into a mausoleum.
Maybe it was time to request reassignment. She could ask to clean the outer buildings. The storage barns. Even the warriors’ restrooms. Anywhere but here. Anywhere she did not have to smell them.
Because the scent hit her the moment she stepped inside. Fresh. Strong. Intertwined.
Jason and Willow.
The mating bond between them lingered thick in the air, almost suffocating. It clung to the linens, to the walls, to the carved wooden bedframe.
Julia swallowed hard and forced herself to move forward. She stripped the bed with steady hands. Folded the used sheets without looking at the faint impressions left behind. Replaced them with fresh ones.
She could hear their voices from the adjoining sitting room earlier that morning.
Respectful.
Equal.
Public.
The way an alpha spoke to his luna.
Something he had never given her—not openly, not even in private. With her, he had been commanding. Protective. Possessive. Never respectful. Not even an ounce.
Her chest tightened, but she did not stop working.
When she finished, she moved on to the beta’s quarters. That room had always felt colder. More disciplined. She was halfway through dusting the shelves when the door opened behind her. She did not turn immediately. She already knew who it was.
Beta Kirk.
She continued wiping the surface, keeping her back straight.
“I wonder,” Kirk’s voice broke the silence.
Julia paused but did not face him.
“How does it feel to know that your mate did not choose you?”
The words were calm and cruel.
Julia slowly turned to look at him.
“I warned you before, omega.” His expression held no warmth. Only sharp observation. “The alpha would never choose you. The alpha’s duty is to the pack. The pack always comes first.” His gaze hardened. “But you did not listen.”
Julia remembered.
The day he cornered her near the forest edge. The quiet threat disguised as advice. Leave the pack. Don’t dream beyond your station.
"I will help you go somewhere else." He had told her she would always be an omega here. The lowest ranking wolf. That staying would only bring her pain.
But she had believed in Jason. Believed in her mate. Believed that love could bend hierarchy.
“I told you to leave,” Kirk said quietly. “I even offered to help you. So you would not feel this kind of pain. But you chose to dream. You chose to walk beside him blindly.”
Julia lowered her gaze. “Yes, Beta.”
“If you had listened,” he went on, voice tightening slightly, “I would not have to look at those dead eyes. I would not have to feel this guilt knowing I played a part in what happened. I should have advised the alpha to reject you properly instead of letting this continue.” His jaw clenched. “You made me feel inadequate in my role as beta.”
Julia bowed her head fully. “I apologize for any inconvenience I have caused you, Beta. It was not my intention. I hope you can forgive me.”
The words tasted like ash.
“Haven’t you noticed?” Kirk studied her, and he asked quietly. “It is still early, yet you have already bowed your head more times today than you ever have before. I know you are an omega, but even you did not lower yourself this much.”
Julia said nothing. There was nothing left to defend.
“What is going on in here?”
The deep voice cut through the room.
Jason stood in the doorway. His presence filled the space immediately.
“Nothing, Alpha,” Kirk replied smoothly. “I was merely asking about Julia’s health. She mentioned earlier she was not feeling well.”
Jason’s eyes shifted to her. Concern flickered across his face.
Julia kept her gaze down. “Thank you for your concern, Beta. But I am fine.”
She moved toward the door, intending to leave. A hand wrapped around her wrist.
Jason’s grip was firm.
“Running from me will not help, Julia,” he said quietly. “Avoiding my eyes, refusing to look at me, it only makes me want to push further.”
She did not struggle. She did not look up.
“I will see you tonight,” he continued. “We need to discuss the arrangement of our relationship.”
Arrangement.
As if she were an item to be negotiated.
“Expect me in your cabin at the usual time.”
He released her and walked out without another word.
The room fell silent again.
Julia remained still for several seconds before finally turning her head slightly.
Kirk was watching her. The sharpness in his expression had faded. In its place was something heavier. Regret. He inhaled deeply. But he said nothing. There was nothing he could say.
Julia had chosen her path the moment she decided to stay. The moment she chose to become the alpha’s secret mate. The moment she believed love could outrank hierarchy.
Now she would bear the consequences.
Julia stepped out of the beta’s room and into the corridor. Her steps were steady. Her back straight.
Inside, the pain remained. But it no longer raged. It settled. Cold. Controlled. And waiting.
Julia did not know how she survived the rest of the day. She moved. She worked. She breathed.
She spoke only when spoken to. Kept her head lowered. Kept her hands busy. She did not allow herself even a moment of stillness, because she knew the second she stopped, the pain would swallow her whole.
She cleaned the storage rooms.
Polished the hallway floors.
Replaced water basins.
Washed linens.
The pack house bustled with energy, celebrating their new alliance. Warriors laughed louder. Leaders walked with pride. The scent of Nightfang mingled with Silver Fang in every corridor.
And Julia endured.
The hardest moment came near midday.
She had been assigned to bring fresh documents from the study to the alpha’s office. A simple task. One she had done countless times before.
Her steps were steady as she approached the open door. She did not expect— Them.
Jason stood inside the office, his hands firmly at Willow’s waist. Willow’s fingers tangled in his hair as they kissed passionately. Not reserved. Not strategic. Intimate. Possessive.
The open door left nothing to the imagination.
