The bruises appeared three days later.
Not on her skin.
Inside her life.
Dr. Chloe Rain stood inside the underground parking garage beneath the Behavioral Analysis Unit staring at her destroyed car in complete silence.
Every window shattered.
Tires slashed.
Dark paint scratched deeply across the metal doors.
And written across the windshield in violent silver spray paint:
HE WILL DESTROY YOU BEAUTIFULLY.
Cold air settled heavily into her lungs.
For several seconds, she couldn’t move.
Couldn’t breathe.
Couldn’t think.
Because the message felt personal in a way the previous warnings never had.
Not a threat.
A prediction.
Behind her, footsteps echoed softly through the empty garage.
“Dr. Rain?”
Officer Hernandez approached carefully, eyes widening when he saw the vehicle.
“Jesus Christ…”
Chloe remained motionless.
The words on the glass kept replaying inside her mind.
He will destroy you beautifully.
Why did that sound exactly like James?
Her phone vibrated instantly in her coat pocket.
And somehow she already knew.
She answered without taking her eyes off the windshield.
“You sent someone to follow me again?”
James Dean Luca’s voice emerged low through the speaker.
“No.”
A pause.
“What happened.”
The concern sounded immediate.
Real.
Which only made her emotions more complicated.
“My car.”
Silence.
Then his voice sharpened instantly.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Where are you?”
“Parking garage.”
Another silence.
But this one felt different.
Dangerous.
Controlled anger.
“Stay there,” he said quietly.
“James—”
“Stay there.”
The line disconnected.
Chloe lowered the phone slowly while Hernandez stared at the vandalized vehicle.
“You think this is connected to your case?”
“Yes.”
But even as she answered, another thought disturbed her deeply:
Part of her wasn’t afraid.
Part of her immediately wanted James there.
And that realization frightened her more than the threat itself.
Twenty minutes later, a black car slid silently into the underground garage.
James stepped out before the engine fully stopped.
Dark coat.
Black gloves.
Controlled violence radiating from him so intensely that even Officer Hernandez instinctively moved back slightly.
Chloe watched James’s expression shift the moment he saw the windshield.
Not shock.
Recognition.
And then—
rage.
Real rage.
The atmosphere around him changed immediately.
Quieter.
Colder.
Predatory.
“You need to leave,” James said calmly to Hernandez.
The officer hesitated.
“With respect, sir—”
“Now.”
The tone wasn’t loud.
That somehow made it worse.
Hernandez looked toward Chloe uncertainly.
She gave a small nod.
Moments later, they were alone.
James stared at the car in silence for several long seconds before speaking.
“This wasn’t meant to scare you.”
Chloe folded her arms tightly.
“Then what was it meant to do?”
His eyes lifted toward hers slowly.
“Mark territory.”
A chill slid down her spine instantly.
“What.”
James stepped closer to the destroyed vehicle.
“Orpheus doesn’t kill impulsively.”
His voice remained calm, but she could hear tension beneath it.
“He destabilizes emotionally first.”
Lightning flashed faintly outside the parking entrance.
“He wants you psychologically vulnerable before he escalates.”
The words settled heavily between them.
Chloe stared at James carefully.
“You talk about him like you know him personally.”
Silence.
Again.
Always silence.
And suddenly Chloe felt anger burn through her exhaustion.
“You keep doing this,” she whispered sharply.
“Doing what.”
“Giving me half-truths.”
James looked at her without moving.
Dark eyes unreadable beneath the harsh garage lighting.
“Because full truths would make you run.”
“Maybe I should.”
Another silence.
Then quietly—
“But you won’t.”
The certainty in his voice infuriated her because it was true.
God.
That was the worst part.
He knew her now.
Too well.
“You don’t get to decide that,” Chloe snapped.
“No.”
He stepped closer slowly.
“But I understand you enough to know fear stopped working on you a long time ago.”
The words struck painfully deep.
Because yes—
somewhere during this investigation, danger itself had stopped pushing her away.
Now it pulled her closer.
Especially when it involved him.
Chloe hated how accurately James could read her emotional fractures.
Like he could see every contradiction she tried hiding from herself.
“You think this is romantic?” she whispered.
His gaze darkened instantly.
“No.”
A pause.
“I think this is becoming dangerous in ways neither of us can control anymore.”
The honesty in his voice softened her anger slightly.
Which frustrated her even more.
Because every time she tried pulling away emotionally, James responded with exactly enough vulnerability to pull her back.
Emotional warfare.
Again.
Always.
“You know what scares me?” Chloe asked quietly.
James watched her carefully.
“I can’t tell whether you’re protecting me…”
Her voice lowered.
“…or teaching me to depend on you.”
The silence that followed felt devastating.
Because for the first time—
James didn’t answer immediately.
And that hesitation told her everything.
“You see?” Chloe whispered bitterly.
“That right there.”
James inhaled slowly through his nose.
“I never wanted this.”
“Wanted what.”
“You needing me.”
The confession hit harder than expected.
Not because of arrogance.
Because he sounded exhausted by it.
Like he understood the danger too.
“And yet,” Chloe murmured softly, “you keep making yourself impossible to leave.”
His jaw tightened subtly.
“You think I enjoy watching you lose yourself around me?”
“You notice it.”
“I notice everything.”
God.
That voice.
Low.
Controlled.
Dangerous enough to feel intimate.
Chloe turned away abruptly and walked deeper into the garage, trying to create distance before her emotions betrayed her again.
But James followed slowly.
Not crowding her.
Not stopping her.
Just staying close enough to affect her breathing.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered.
“Probably not.”
“Then why are you?”
A pause.
Then quietly—
“Because the thought of something happening to you feels unbearable now.”
The sincerity in his voice nearly shattered her composure.
Chloe closed her eyes briefly.
This was the problem.
Every frightening thing about him existed beside something heartbreakingly tender.
Violence and gentleness living inside the same man.
And she no longer knew which side of him was more dangerous.
James stopped directly behind her.
Close enough for warmth to radiate against her back.
Not touching.
Worse.
Restraining himself from touching.
“You know what Orpheus understands better than most people?” he asked softly.
Chloe swallowed slowly.
“What.”
“That fear doesn’t create attachment.”
His voice lowered near her ear.
“Protection does.”
Heat moved through her instantly despite herself.
God.
Even now.
Even angry.
Her body still reacted to him.
“He wants you emotionally isolated,” James continued quietly.
“So when things become unbearable…”
A pause.
“…you only turn toward me.”
The realization hit her like cold water.
Because it was already happening.
Every threat.
Every fear.
Every sleepless night—
ended with her wanting James near her.
Not despite the danger.
Because of it.
Chloe turned toward him sharply.
“You’re saying he’s manipulating me into depending on you?”
“No.”
James’s eyes locked onto hers.
“I’m saying he realized too late that you already do.”
The words destroyed the remaining distance between them emotionally.
Because they were true.
Painfully true.
Chloe hated how much relief she felt standing near him right now.
Hated how safe danger suddenly felt when it wore James Dean Luca’s face.
“You know what this sounds like?” she whispered.
His gaze softened slightly.
“What.”
“A trauma bond.”
A faint shadow crossed his expression.
“Maybe.”
The honesty hurt more than denial.
Because James never insulted her intelligence by pretending things were normal.
He saw the toxicity too.
And somehow they kept falling deeper anyway.
“You should leave me alone,” Chloe whispered softly.
James stared at her for several long seconds.
Then finally—
“You don’t actually want that.”
Her eyes burned unexpectedly.
Because again—
he understood her too well.
“No,” she admitted quietly.
The confession echoed through the empty parking garage.
Raw.
Humiliating.
Honest.
And suddenly Chloe realized something terrifying:
Love and danger had started feeling identical.
James stepped closer slowly until only inches remained between them.
His gloved hand lifted carefully toward her face.
Giving her time.
Choice.
An exit.
She never took it.
His fingers brushed softly along her jaw, and instantly her pulse betrayed her again.
“You react to me like your body already made a decision your mind is still fighting,” he murmured.
Chloe looked up at him through exhausted eyes.
“You make me feel insane.”
“No.”
His thumb brushed lightly beneath her chin.
“I make you feel everything you spent years suppressing.”
The words wrapped around her chest painfully.
Because maybe that was true too.
Maybe James didn’t create her darkness.
Maybe he simply uncovered it.
“You know what the worst part is?” Chloe whispered.
James studied her silently.
“When I saw the message on my car…”
Her voice trembled slightly.
“…part of me immediately wanted you.”
The confession changed his expression instantly.
Something emotional cracking beneath his composure.
Not victory.
Pain.
Need.
Protectiveness.
Love.
God.
That terrified her most of all.
Because suddenly she saw it clearly:
This thing between them was no longer obsession pretending to be attraction.
It was becoming something softer.
Deeper.
More catastrophic.
And maybe that was the real danger.
Not that James Dean Luca could destroy her—
but that she might willingly let him.
