"Do not look around, Lady Rea," the waiter whispered, his voice incredibly low and hurried as his breath brushed against her ear. "Someone from your past is watching from below."
Rea froze, her hand gripping the edge of the smooth glass table until her synthetic fingernails turned a pale, bloodless white. The words hit her like an electrical surge directly into her spine, short-circuiting the fragile composure she had maintained throughout the agonizing dinner. Her heart hammered against her artificial ribs, sending frantic spikes of adrenaline through her system. She desperately wanted to lift her head and look over the edge of the elevated balcony, to look through the transparent glass floor at the swirling neon fog of the Lower Districts beneath Orbit-7, but the cold weight of Zeldin’s previous warning held her in place.
The waiter moved with practiced, professional fluidity, placing the fresh glass of mineral water near her plate before picking up his silver tray. He did not linger for even a second, stepping backward into the stream of passing service androids and disappearing into the crowded, shimmering main dining hall.
Rea stared at the sparkling water, her breathing turning shallow and uneven. Someone from her past. The phrase could only mean one person. Giska was not dead, nor was he hiding in the deep shadows of the subterranean slums as Zeldin had claimed. He was here, or at least his agents were, circling the edges of her luxurious cage like wolves waiting for a tear in the fence. A dark mixture of intense fear and a sudden, dangerous spark of hope tangled together in her chest. If Giska was watching, then she was not completely cut off from the world outside Zeldin’s absolute monopoly.
She stood up abruptly, her knees brushing against the heavy obsidian table. The silver cybernetic gown immediately registered the sudden change in her heart rate, its micro-filaments pulsing with a low, silver hum that warned her against volatile movements. She ignored the mechanical restriction, forcing her body forward as she walked toward the sweeping, open-air balcony that extended from the side of the VIP platform.
The air on the balcony was crisp and filtered, artificial wind carrying the faint, clean scent of high-altitude ozone. The panoramic view of Neo-Soma stretched out before her, a mountain of glittering metal towers that pierced the heavy grey clouds. Below the floating restaurant, the sheer drop into the Lower Districts looked like an endless, glowing abyss of green neon grids and industrial smoke. Rea leaned against the cold glass railing, her eyes searching the lower observation decks and the private landing pads where hundreds of luxury aerocars drifted like fireflies.
"Looking for a way out, Rea, or looking for him?" a deep, metallic voice rumbled directly behind her, cutting through the rush of the wind.
Before she could turn around, a massive, heavy presence slammed into her back. Zeldin wrapped his powerful arms around her waist from behind, pulling her body flush against his reinforced cybernetic torso. His grip was unyielding, crushing the delicate silver silk of her gown against his cold obsidian-metal framework. The scent of expensive cologne and ozone filled her senses as he leaned his head down, his smooth half-flesh face pressing firmly against her cheek while his left black-chrome plate remained freezing against her neck.
"Zeldin," Rea gasped, her hands instantly flying to his forearms as she tried to pull away from his suffocating embrace. "You scared me. I just wanted some fresh air. The dining room was getting suffocating."
"You are a terrible liar, my beautiful doll," Zeldin murmured, his voice a low, mechanical vibration that echoed directly into her skull. "Your pulse rate spiked by forty percent the moment I stepped out of the VIP lounge. The biometric sensors in your dress are transmitting a fascinating sequence of panic and anticipation to my network."
He did not release her. Instead, his long, leather-gloved fingers slid upward along her collarbone, his touch deliberately slow and dominating. Rea shivered, her entire body locking up under the immense physical power of his hold. She could feel the hard, mechanical rhythm of his internal micro-servos clicking against her shoulder blades, a constant reminder that the man who used to love her was now an apex predator designed for absolute control.
"I was just looking at the view," Rea whispered, her voice cracking as she stared down at the distant lights, trying to hide the terror in her eyes. "You said I could enjoy the luxury you bought for me."
"I said you could enjoy it under my terms," Zeldin corrected her coldly, his human eye narrowing as he looked over her shoulder at the expansive city below. "I know exactly what whispered into your ear just a moment ago. Did you truly believe a low-level organic waiter could bypass the audio surveillance field of this platform without my security mainframe recording every single syllable?"
Rea’s breath caught in her throat, her stomach dropping into a bottomless well of horror. He knew. He had heard the warning.
Zeldin reached into the breast pocket of his tailored tuxedo jacket with his right hand, withdrawing a thick, heavy band of pure platinum and clusters of glowing diamond chips. It was a high-frequency tracking collar, an advanced piece of security hardware that pulsed with a sharp, blinding blue light. With a smooth, brutal movement, he snapped the collar around her neck, locking it directly over her existing cybernetic choker with a heavy, definitive metallic click.
The moment the lock engaged, a sharp prick of needles pierced the base of her skull as the collar’s internal transmitter synchronized with her nervous system. Rea whimpered, her hands gripping his metal arm for support as a rush of digital data flooded her internal retinal display, marking her coordinates as permanently pinned to Zeldin Corp's secure tactical server.
"There," Zeldin whispered, his lips brushing against her earlobe with a terrifying tenderness. "Now, no matter how deep he hides in the trenches, and no matter how hard you look for him, you will always be broadcasted as my exclusive property. Let him watch from the shadows. Let him see exactly how expensive his mistakes have become."
Rea clutched the heavy diamond collar, her teeth chattering from the cold energy radiating from the device. She realized then that her compliance was no longer just about survival; she was the central prize in a twisted game of corporate dominance, a shining piece of bait meant to draw her former lover into a fatal trap.
Far below the floating crystal platforms of Orbit-7, hidden inside the darkened interior of a cloaked logistics aerocar drifting through the toxic clouds of Sektor 3, a pair of glowing yellow cybernetic eyes focused on the balcony. Giska sat in the shadows of the vehicle’s terminal desk, his scarred face twisted into a mask of pure, murderous rage as his long-range optical sensors captured the live projection of Zeldin holding Rea against the glass railing. The brilliant silver of her dress and the blinding blue glow of the new diamond collar lit up his monitors, reflecting the absolute wealth that had once been within his grasp.
Giska slammed his organic fist onto the metal console, leaving a deep dent in the plating as his breathing turned into a ragged, furious growl. "He thinks he can parade her in front of the entire elite like a trophy from a successful raid."
"The tracking signal on Lady Rea has just been upgraded to a military-grade corporate encryption, sir," his lead technician reported from the front seat, his fingers flying across a diagnostic keyboard. "We can no longer intercept her direct location without triggering an immediate counter-hack from Zeldin's personal network."
Giska’s cybernetic eye whined as it zoomed in on the image of Zeldin’s half-chrome face smiling down at the terrified woman. The humiliation was absolute, a public declaration that Zeldin had not only rebuilt his empire from the ashes but had also taken the one thing Giska used to secure his leverage.
"Let him lock her in his highest tower for now," Giska hissed, his artificial teeth grinding together as he watched the aerocar on the balcony prepare for departure. "He wants a war of assets, and I will give him one that will burn the very foundations of Apex Tower down to the dirt."
